Selig To Reinstate HR Crown to Aaron?

Is baseball's steroid scandal about to make Hank Aaron the once and future home run king?

Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig reportedly is considering restoring the crown to Aaron, who lost it in 2007 to Barry Bonds.

Bonds is set to go on trial on March 2 on obstruction of justice charges related a federal investigation into the BALCO steroid scandal.

Bonds' trainer was indicted on charges he supplied steroids and other performance-enhancement drugs to baseball players through BALCO, leading to speculation that Bonds also had used steroids, allegations he denies. - Fox News

As one commenter on the issue stated, "Bud Selig practically encouraged the entire steroids era. Seeing him running around demanding apologies and acting pissed off about steroids users is enraging." Another one tied in some humor, "This is like Mark Foley campaigning against child pornography. Oh, wait... it's exactly like it."

A-Rod Tested Positive in 2003

In 2003, when he won the American League home run title and the AL Most Valuable Player award as a shortstop for the Texas Rangers, Alex Rodriguez tested positive for two anabolic steroids, four sources have independently told Sports Illustrated.

Rodriguez's name appears on a list of 104 players who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball's '03 survey testing, SI's sources say. As part of a joint agreement with the MLB Players Association, the testing was conducted to determine if it was necessary to impose mandatory random drug testing across the major leagues in 2004.

When approached by an SI reporter on Thursday at a gym in Miami, Rodriguez declined to discuss his 2003 test results. "You'll have to talk to the union," said Rodriguez, the Yankees' third baseman since his trade to New York in February 2004. When asked if there was an explanation for his positive test, he said, "I'm not saying anything." - Sports Illustrated

Sucks for you, A-Rod!

Kobe Bryant's Record Night

Kobe Bryant had plenty of motivation for his record-setting performance at Madison Square Garden.

With a postgame work date planned with Knicks fan Spike Lee, who was sitting in the front row, Bryant put on a show the filmmaker couldn’t criticize, setting a current arena record with 61 points to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 126-117 victory over New York on Monday night.

“I’m going to review this documentary I’m doing with Spike Lee tonight after the game and I didn’t feel like sitting next to him and hearing him talking trash about the Knicks, so that was added incentive as well,” Bryant said. “Seriously. He’s going to get an earful tonight.”

Bryant entertained a sold-out crowd that took turns booing him and saluting him with “MVP!” chants during an electrifying performance. - Yahoo!

Hall of Fame Becoming Irrelevant

Congratulations to Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice for their inductions into baseball’s Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Rickey was a no-brainer, yet somehow more than 5% of the voters felt he wasn’t worthy. Rice was a controversial pick, but regardless of where you stand on his worthiness, you have to feel happy for him.

And that’s about where I stop caring about baseball’s Hall of Fame.

Unlike a lot of baseball fans, I did not get into endless debates about why Rice’s numbers aren’t exactly Hall-worthy, or why Bert Blyleven should have been voted in years ago. The Hall means nothing anymore, at least to me. Baseball is such a great sport not just for the action on the field, but for the antiquity and the lore. Who hasn’t been told stories of Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio, or Don Larsen’s perfect game in the 1956 World Series, or the mastery of Bob Gibson? - Baseball Digest (Click to read the rest)/ Bill Baer

I agree with Bill here.

Henderson, Rice Elected to Hall

Jan. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Rickey Henderson, who has the most stolen bases in Major League Baseball history, was elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year on the ballot, while Jim Rice earned the honor during his last year of consideration from the sport’s writers.

Both earned enough votes to win a spot in the shrine in Cooperstown, New York, Rice was selected on his 15th and final time on the ballot.

Henderson, who also scored the most runs in major-league history, was named on 511, or 94.8 percent, of the 539 ballots cast by members of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Rice, who played his entire 16-year career with the Boston Red Sox, got 76.4 percent of the vote.

Congrats to these two former Red Sox players.

Sox Sign FA Baldelli

The Red Sox announced the signing of Baldelli, a native of Woonsocket, R.I., on Thursday night at the annual dinner of the Boston Baseball Writers Association.

Baldelli, who had spent his entire career with the Rays before becoming a free agent, will be the Sox's fourth outfielder behind Jason Bay, Jacoby Ellsbury and J.D. Drew.

The Sox appear to be getting Baldelli at the right moment, with his health seemingly on the upswing. The deal was first reported by ESPN.com.

Baldelli, 27, missed most of last season with a condition that was diagnosed as mitochondrial fatigue syndrome. - Fox Sports

Baldelli had an amazing year in 2004 when he hit .280, slugged 16 homeruns and drove in 74 runs (not to mention 17 steals).

Greg Cassel Found Dead At 57

SAN JOSE, Calif. - At 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, police and paramedics entered a mobile home in San Bernardino and discovered the body of Matt Cassel's father, Greg, a devastating trauma for Cassel's family and yet another shock to the Patriots.

Greg Cassel's death, at 57, threw into question whether his son will play Sunday against the Raiders in Oakland, a must-win game for the Patriots in their late-season push for a playoff berth. Cassel did not participate in practice yesterday at San Jose State University, leaving the team to be with his family in Southern California.

Coach Bill Belichick did not have a timetable for Cassel's return and did not say whether he expected Cassel would play Sunday.

"Right now, we are just taking it day to day," Belichick said. "He's going to take care of what he has to do." - Boston Globe

I thought this was insensitive on the Globe's part. It seems like the writers only care about Cassel's status while making light of his father's death.

Coco Crisp Traded To KC

BOSTON -- For more than a year, Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said that he did not feel any urgency to deal center fielder Coco Crisp and that he would only do so if it improved the team.

Epstein finally found that opportunity on Wednesday, dealing the speedy center fielder to the Royals for reliever Ramon Ramirez.

Ramirez, a 27-year-old righty, went 3-2 with a 2.64 ERA in 71 games in 2008. He registered 70 strikeouts in 71 2/3 innings. - Redsox.com

Good move.

Iverson Traded To Pistons

The Denver Nuggets have agreed to a deal that would send Allen Iverson to the Pistons in exchange for Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess and Cheikh Samb, the two teams announced Monday.

"We are pleased to welcome Allen Iverson to the Pistons organization," said Joe Dumars, Pistons President of Basketball Operations. "Allen has proven he is one of the elite players in the league and we like what he adds to our roster at the guard position. We appreciate everything that Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess and Cheikh Samb brought to the organization during their time here in Detroit and we certainly wish them all the best." - NBA.com

This is certainly something you'd expect in February, not November.

Brady Out For Season W/ ACL Injury

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is expected to miss the rest of the 2008 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, according to a source familiar with the injury.
While New England coach Bill Belichick said in his postgame press conference that he had no update on the status of Brady’s injury, two sources indicated it involved serious damage to the knee.“It’s bad,” a team source said. “We’re going to have to play without him.” - Yahoo!
That's just too bad.

Chad Ocho-Cinco

If the Cincinnati Bengals' offseason couldn't get any more strange, Pro Bowl receiver Chad Johnson may have added a new chapter just before the regular season.

According to Miami radio station 790 The Ticket, which is in Johnson's hometown, the receiver has legally changed his last name to "Ocho Cinco." Johnson's -- sorry -- Ocho Cinco's reported name change has been rumored in NFL circles for weeks, and according to the station today, it's official.

Johnson forewarned the public that a major surprise was coming during a recent interview with Chris McKendry on ESPN's SportsCenter. - ESPN

Definitely "lol funny dude" worthy.

9 Year Old Too Good For League

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP)—Nine-year-old Jericho Scott is a good baseball player— too good, it turns out.

The right-hander has a fastball that tops out at about 40 mph. He throws so hard that the Youth Baseball League of New Haven told his coach that the boy could not pitch any more. When Jericho took the mound anyway last week, the opposing team forfeited the game, packed its gear and left, his coach said.

Officials for the three-year-old league, which has eight teams and about 100 players, said they will disband Jericho’s team, redistributing its players among other squads, and offered to refund $50 sign-up fees to anyone who asks for it. They say Jericho’s coach, Wilfred Vidro, has resigned.

But Vidro says he didn’t quit and the team refuses to disband. Players and parents held a protest at the league’s field on Saturday urging the league to let Jericho pitch.

Oh no, not 40 miles per hour!
