Martin Hyppolite, senior RB for the Warriors, set a handful of records in 2008. It would be an understatement to say that he dominated his opponents. Here are his records:

Wakefield Tops Melrose, 34-27
With thanks to Martin Hyppolite, more thanks to Martin Hyppolite, and even more thanks to Martin Hyppolite, the Wakefield Warriors were able to defeat the Melrose Red Raiders on Thanksgiving, 34-27. Hyppolite scored four TDs and easily rushed for 216 yards. He started off a little slow, but scored the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter. One of the reasons why the Warriors were also able to win was because Melrose QB Jack Pizzotti suffered a second half injury. In the first half, the Warriors had an incredibly difficult time containing the unbelievably quick Pizzotti, who had three TDs on the day.

Comments From An Anonymous WHS Soccer Player
"We are not that bad; we just can't win. The coach [Sam Hochberg] is putting people in the wrong positions and is playing people who shouldn't be on the field, let alone on the team. He refuses to play the best players at the same time. He doesn't start those who should start and he subs in those who shouldn't be subbed in. Half of the kids couldn't care less if we don't win. Four or five kids trained over the summer. There is a severe lack of balls and heart on the team. We lack focus and discipline to do what the coach tells us to do. The coach is doing a good job, though. We've also gotten screwed by the refs and lost a few heart breakers like our first game against Reading. The star players are disappointments. There is a severe lack of leadership. Too many players are mentally unprepared. These kids are killing us every game. We are not able to mentally recover."The WHS Boys Soccer team is win-less through its first nine games

Wakefield 36 Tewksbury 12
The Wakefield High Football team defeated Tewksbury on Saturday, 36-12. The Warriors got things started early in the first quarter as senior tight end Mike Reynolds caught a 5 yard TD pass (Caio Pacheco PAT) from senior quarterback John Amentola. Martin Hyppolite then scored on a 5 yard run (Pacheco PAT) to make the score 14-0. In the second quarter Tewksbury was able to score on a nice run by senior runningback Joel Altavesta, but not before Wakefield scored two more Hyppolite touchdowns: a 30 yard run and a 15 yard reception from Amentola. Zach Boyages was able to escape all defenders en route to a 43 yard TD run in the third quarter to make it 36-6. Tewksbury scored in the fourth quarter on another Altevesta run, but it was too little too late.

Martin Gaining More Recognition
Good for Martin. I hope he has a great senior season.Wakefield, Mass. linebacker Martin Hyppolite continues to hold three offers. The 6-foot-0, 210-pounder is hearing from a number of BCS colleges. Is anyone else close to offering?
“I’ve got three offers from Bryant, Army and Navy,” he said. “I’m talking to Duke a little more now. I’m also hearing from Boston College and Maryland.
“They all just want to keep in touch with me over my senior year. I think they want to see more film before I do anything.”
The two-star prospect has no visits planned in the near future at this time.
Does he like anyone?
“I like Maryland a lot, but if it comes down to it. I’ll take whatever I can,” he stated. “I’ve always liked Maryland’s football team. I went to Maryland for a day and liked it a lot.”
The No. 9 prospect in Massachusetts will begin practice next week.
“We’ll be a strong team this year,” he said. “We’re fast and strong.
“I’m looking to get more touchdowns and more yards. I really want to get college coaches to look at me.” - Yahoo! Sports

WHS Football Training Camp Preview
Quarterbacks: Nick Dettorre, John Amentola, Tyler McGrail, Sajan Thakkar, Zach Duffy
Comments: All five are talented, but none have the size and arm of 2008 graduate Brian Millea. Dettorre, Amentola, and Thakkar might get the first looks because they are seniors but Duffy is a better athlete than the three of them. McGrail's status is uncertain considering he is coming off a leg injury sustained last fall.
Tailbacks: Mike McLaughlin, Rob Smith, Martin Hyppolite, Zach Boyages, Nick Haley, Mike Treacy
Comments: Hyppolite is coming off a 1,000 yard season as a junior. He is one of the Middlesex League's best offensive talents and is projected as a strong Division 1 player in college. Boyages and Smith were given a few touches last fall and may make for solid back-ups behind Hyppolite.
Fullbacks: Matt Riley, Stan Misiano, Chris Pizano, Mike Holler, Jason Federico
Comments: One of the weakest positions for the Warriors is fullback. With a load of inexperience including three juniors with only JV experience, the Warriors will most likely turn to Federico, an undersized but strong bruiser. Riley is one of the toughest players on the squad and could also be looked at to plow the way for Hyppolite.
Split-Ends: Joe Grondin, Shane Taylor, Connor Nixon, Tyler Popp, Mike Fiore, Dave DellaRocco, Mike Noonan, Chris Glynn, Brian Coullahan, John Fox, Jack Severt, Zach Sallese, Jebson Dorgilus, Josh Latham, Caio Pacheco, Matt Lincoff
Comments: Although there are a wealth of split-ends on the roster, the Warriors have a pretty good idea who will be the significant contributors in 2008. As a sophomore, Taylor started at receiver and was arguably the best one the team had. DellaRocco, standing at 6'3, is one of the tallest receivers in the league. He is the ideal big target, but he must continue to work on limiting drops. Sallese is another player who got considerable varsity experience in 2007. He plays his position very similar to DellaRocco.
Tightends: Ray Elcewicz, Jamie Roche, Joe Keegan, Mike Reynolds
Comments: Elcewicz is gigantic (6'6/220 lbs) meaning that he could probably manhandle any defensive end or linebacker that gets in his way. As a blocker, you couldn't ask for more. Reynolds is more of a crafty option who has very good hands and athletic ability.
Offensive Lineman: Justin Perry, Chris Annetti, Matt Manfredi, Shawn Conway, Dave Callahan, Tom Dorney, Pat Holleran, Jon Puccio, Jake McCarthy, Andrew Fallon, Tom Rea, George Kopanas, Jeff Sacco, Dan Tartarino, Chris Garabedian, John Carano, Mike Hubbard
Comments: Who is going to block for Hyppolite? These guys. It is unfortunate that one of the league's best players (Hyppolite) doesn't have all-league protectors. Perry, Conway, Callahan, and Sacco are almost sure bets to start. The two players here to keep an eye on are Conway, a tri-captain and Sacco, a participant in combines. Still, none of them are as high profile as the 2006 offensive line which paved the way for all-scholastic rusher Shane Brown. That team featured the likes of Evan Wattles (arguably the most talented player on the team), Brandon Flanagan (Buffalo), Paul Seabury, Mike Gurdjian, and Mike Carlin (Endicott).

Middlesex League To Add Two Towns
The Middlesex League may have just gotten bigger.Principals of the 10 schools in the league voted unanimously Wednesday to look into the possibility of adding two towns.
Still on the table is whether to divide the league into two conferences, or “tier” it by school strength or enrollment, to create more matched competition.
If the new 12-team league is formed, schools would then look into the possibility of “tiering,” School Committee Chairman Tony Paolillo said.
Paolillo said Wednesday’s vote puts Watertown and all other Middlesex schools in a good position.
“To have this type of movement and type of vote is a positive move and step forward,” he said.
Paolillo said the hunt for two more communities to join the league shouldn’t be hard, and said he has already heard of interested schools.
When it comes to tiering, Watertown athletic director Michael Lahiff has said he supports the proposed league re-alignment since it would give Watertown — the league’s smallest school — a better chance to remain in contention through tournament season.
Under one tiering proposal, each conference team would play against each other twice, and once against the upper-conference teams.
Who’s in the Middlesex League?Belmont, Burlington, Lexington, Melrose, Reading, Stoneham, Wakefield, Watertown, Winchester, Woburn. Plus two towns to be named later. - Winchester Star
This could work out great for not only WHS Tennis but also all WHS sports teams. If you've been following the Boys Tennis team, you will quickly realize that the only teams we can beat are Woburn, Watertown, and Stoneham. That is six possible wins right there. If we beat the two towns that'll join the league, we could have up to ten possible wins. We would then only need two more wins to advance to the state tournament.

WHS Boys Tennis Team Holds Ping-Pong Tourney
The Wakefield High School Boys Tennis Team held its annual banquet and ping pong tournament on Tuesday, May 27. The tournament was hosted at junior Derek Krevat's residence. The first round of action saw Rex Lam handedly defeat Ryan Suh, Dan Lieberfarb take care of Mike Slafsky, Chris Fanikos beat Brian Li, and Krevat seal the win over Kevin Dwyer-Heidkamp. On the other side of the bracket in the first round, Brian Hurley barely won against 2007 graduate Joe Flynn, Coach Robertson easily defeated Joe's brother Tom, Prateek sealed the deal over Steve Parad, and Glen Maganzini barely notched the "W" over Coach Metropolis. In the quarter finals, Lam won against Lieberfarb, Krevat topped Fanikos, Coach Robertson beat Hurley, and Prateek defeated Maganzini. In the semi-finals, Krevat won against Lam while Coach Robertson put Prateek away pretty easily. In the finals, Coach Robertson gave an "A" effort as he took care of Krevat, 21-10.

WHS Boys Tennis Team Goes 5-13
The WHS Boys Tennis team wanted to finish statistically higher in 2008 than they did in 2007. The end result: 5 wins in 2008 as opposed to the 4 in 2007. The Warriors graduated a handful of players in 2007, but enough 2008 players were able to step up their games and prove that this year's crop of players were a bit better.
In the pre-season many positions were fiercely up for grabs. With the likes of Joe Flynn, Tom Flynn, Adam Kuks, Mike Staffiere, and Dan Muise gone, the two doubles (first and second) positions opened up in addition to a few JV spots. First, for singles, co-Captain Jason Parad played 12 games at first singles. Last year, Parad played 17 at first singles as a junior. Parad was over-matched at times by some of the State's best talent, but he still consistently won games. He finished with 38% of his games won. Brian Hurley played most of his matches at second singles, which is actually quite a remarkable feat considering he only played 5 varsity matches as a sophomore in 2007. At first, Hurley had a tough time acquainting himself with the singles scene, but he was able to win a few matches and finished with 32% of his games won. At third singles was junior Glen Maganzini. Maganzini played almost every match in 2007 one spot ahead at second singles. The change was a good thing for Maganzini as he finished with 38% of his games won (up from 34%).
Doubles was a different cup of coffee for the Warriors. New tandems were formed (and eventually changed) at the start of the season. Sophomores Steve Parad and Rex Lam played a majority of the season together at first doubles. They didn't do all that great together (save a tough 6-4, 6-4 win over Stoneham) and were eventually paired with other players. Lam and Mike Slafsky, a senior co-Captain, played about three matches with each other and they too squeaked out a win over Stoneham. For many of his other matches, Slafsky played alongside junior Derek Krevat. Slafsky and Krevat, without a doubt, formed one of the best doubles tandems that WHS has seen in recent years. Along with a couple of wins, they played extremely hard against top teams such as Burlington and Belmont. Krevat finished with the highest individual games won percentage, proving that him and his partners got the job done on a fairly regular basis. Chris Fanikos was also in the mix as a doubles player. At first, he played next to Krevat and they played quite well together at second doubles. During the second half of the season, Fanikos' partner was senior Kevin Dwyer-Heidkamp. Heidkamp missed a lot of time during the middle season and initially he couldn't find a groove. His game quickly picked up over the latter half of the season; Fanikos and KDH secured an easy 6-3, 6-3 defeat over Watertown in the second to last game of the season. Another player who was hard working and unrelenting was sophomore Dan Liberfarb. Liberfarb made his varsity debut at first doubles with Rex Lam on April 18th against Woburn, the worst team in the Middlesex League. Then, four days later, Liberfarb and Steve Parad literally come out of nowhere to beat the best team in the state, Winchester, in a third set tiebreaker. Ryan Coburn, a junior, like KDH missed many a game during the season, but when he played, he usually did so very well. He had a JV team high of 48% games won, but this was only in his 62 games of play. Two sophomores, Brian Li and Ryan Suh, also got some varsity experience. Li and Suh played together against Winchester (varsity debut for both), but lost 0-6, 1-6. Li played the next day against Watertown alongside Coburn and they were able to win in a lengthy three setter.
What does the future hold for the WHS Boys tennis team? For one, they will be without the older Parad -- the team's top player for two years straight. It will also be tough to replace Slafsky, a doubles mainstay for the past three seasons. KDH was not only a solid doubles player, but simply one of the nicer guys on the team with his illegal license plate, wide framed shades, and his tennis shoes...er loafers. For sure one player will be "gained" and that is Prateek. Prateek, a junior, was off to a pretty amazing start to the season until he suffered an injury to his leg in an early pre-season practice. Prateek surely would have been a varsity player had he not gone down. With that said, the Warriors have a lot to look forward to in 2008. With ten varsity players returning, WHS will hope to increase its winning trend in 2009. Teams like Stoneham and Melrose will be losing, at the minimum, three varsity players a piece to graduation in 2008. Could the Warriors improve their record to 6-12, 7-11, or 8-10? Without a doubt.

Boys Tennis Team Loses To Winchester, 1-4
With clear skies and temperatures in the upper 60s, Tuesday morning was a great time for tennis. The W.H.S. Boys tennis team, with only minimum 7 players present, faced off against Winchester, a team that is going for its third straight state championship. The Warriors have been used to losing to the Sachems by a score of 0-5 over the past few years, but they did manage to steal one event away from the top team in the Middlesex league. That event came at first doubles as sophomores Steve Parad and Dan Liberfarb defeated their opponents in a tie breaker after winning the first set and losing the second. The final result was 7-5, 1-6, 10-8. The other matches didn't go as swimmingly. Myself (Glen Maganzini), playing my first ever game at first singles, fought hard, but lost 2-6, 2-6. Rex Lam, making his singles debut at second, was able to salvage one game as he lost 1-6, 0-6. Another singles debut came at third as junior Derek Krevat, a first year player, fought competitively, but couldn't get a game as he lost 0-6, 0-6. The other doubles featured two players making their varsity debuts. Brian Li and Ryan Suh, two sophomores, proved to be a pretty good duo as they won one game, 0-6, 1-6. With a couple veterans back in action tomorow, the Warriors can only hope to win the entire match against lowly Watertown.

Boys Tennis Team Wins First Match
The WHS Boys Tennis Team finally won a game. The win came against Woburn on Friday, April 18th. The first two singles players -- Jason Parad and Glen Maganzini -- both won their matches. The next two positions, third singles and first doubles, were not able to win their respective matches. With the overall score tied at 2-2, two juniors, Chris Fanikos and Derek Krevat, were able to defeat their opponents at second doubles. Fanikos and Krevat would have normally played first doubles, but a last minute switch was made and it seemingly worked out for the best. The Warriors are now 1-5. The next two games are scheduled for Tuesday, April 22 (Winchester) and Wednesday, April 23 (Watertown). The team will be without many of its top players including Jason Parad, Brian Hurley, Mike Slafsky, and Kevin Dwyer Heidkamp.

WHS Boys Tennis Hopes For Finer Finish In '08
The one thing that the Wakefield High School Boys Tennis team wants to do in 2008 is improve. The team was one of the weaker ones in the Middlesex League as the boys finished 4-14 in 2007. The Warriors graduated six players in 2007 and it will be interesting to see how this will impact the team. Adam Kuks was one of the six who graduated and he spent most of the year at third singles. He finished with an impressive 40% games won percentage. Taking over for Kuks (at least for Monday's game) will be Glen Maganzini. Maganzini, a junior, played primarily at second singles for the Warriors in 2007. He ended the '07 season on somewhat of a high note as he finished 2-2 in the final four games of 2007. His games won percentage was 34%. The Warriors did happen to lose their two varsity double pairings as all four players graduated in 2007. Tom Flynn played very well at seconds doubles and finished with a varsity high 122 games won (43% games won). Tom's brother, Joe, was originally paired with Tom, but midway through the season Joe switched parters and played most of his games at first doubles. Joe finished with a 41% games won percentage. Both of the Flynn's return this season as coaches' assistants. The other two double players were Dan Muise and Mike Staffiere. Muise played mostly at first doubles and finished off with a 37% games won percentage. Perhaps the most memorable game Muise played in was a May 9th standoff against Stoneham. Muise and partner Joe Flynn barely lost in a three setter (7-6, 5-7, 6-7). The team suffered a tough 1-4 loss that day. Staffiere alternated between first and second doubles. The kid just never seemed to lose. He played very competitive tennis and this is reflected in his 147 games lost (lowest varsity total). Staffiere has expressed interest in helping the team in a capacity similar to the Flynn's. To fill the doubles voids will be sophomores Stephen Parad and Rex Lam, junior Derek Krevat, and senior captain Mike Slafsky. Parad and Lam will start off the season at first doubles. Parad teamed up with Andrew Kuks, who now does track, in 2007 and they played really well together. The two played in two varsity matches. Perhaps the best doubles match of the season came when Parad and Kuks defeated Burlington in a very close three setter. Lam will be making his varsity debut on Monday and he is coming off a very solid J.V season. Krevat, a junior, is a first year player who has played exceptionally well in the preseason. Well enough to earn him a spot next to Slafsky. Slafsky in 2007 platooned between first, second, and J.V doubles. His partner was Brian Hurley, who will start the season off at second singles. He is another one who has looked really good in the preseason. He played in five varsity games and compiled a combined J.V/Varsity games won percentage of 44%. Jason Parad, a senior captain, will be playing first singles for the second straight year. Parad had to shoulder quite a load as a junior -- first singles -- as he battled against some of the State's finest tennis players. He met the challenge particularly well as he finished with a 34% games won percentage. His best match came against aforementioned Stoneham; he won against top Spartan's senior Jon Berkman. The J.V isn't as deep as it has been in previous years. There would have been seven J.V spots, but junior Prateek injured himself in practice. Prateek's ankle came up lame in a recent practice. That marked his second ankle injury since last season's end; he suffered a sprained ankle in an autumn hit around with Glen. He will be out for the entire season, just like last year's senior captain Matt Messina, who was forced to watch every match up from behind the cage in 2007. Kevin Dwyer Heidkamp (senior) and Chris Fanikos (junior) will initially form the first J.V doubles pairing. The two played together extensively in 2007 and both players ended with games won percentage higher than 55%. The second J.V doubles tandem will be Dan Liberfarb and Brian Li. Liberfarb, a sophomore, held the highest games won percentage (tied with K.D.H) among the J.V players in 2007. Liberfarb hopes that he can keep it up with Li, also a sophomore. Ryan Coburn, a junior, will figure in the J.V mix somewhere. Ryan Suh, a first year sophomore, will be playing as a J.V floater. Head coaching the team for a seventh straight year is Mr. Robertson. Coach Metropolis is back for his second consecutive season. 5 of the 7 varsity players played in at least a few varsity matches in 2007 and that can only be a good thing against the likes of Burlington, Stoneham, and Melrose -- all teams that the Warriors should play competitively against. As Jason Parad put it: "I think that our record this year will improve since our top three players from last year are still with the team."

WHS Boys B-Ball Loses To Reading, 42-53
In the Division 2 North championship game, the WHS Warriors blew it. Despite all of the hype surrounding the game, the Warriors evidently couldn't stop Reading. I didn't attend the game, so I don't have any statistics in front of me, but I can assure you that Jared Iosua and Nick Serino were held to under 30 points combined. It was a great run, nevertheless.

Girls Hockey Team Defeats Woburn
The #2 ranked WHS girls hockey team defeated #14 Woburn on Thursday night by a score of 3-2 in overtime. The girls go on to face undefeated #1 St. Mary's on Tuesday night at Harvard. That is going to be one tough match as St. Mary's has scored 22 goals in three tournament games. Our girls, well, they've only scored 10.

Boys Hockey Team Crushed By Austin Prep, 6-0
The WHS Boys Hockey team lost to Austin Prep in Chelmsford on Wednesday night by a score of 6-0. The #10 ranked Warriors won games against #7 Burlington and #2 Winchester, but obviously couldn't get the job done on Wednesday night. Austin Prep now goes onto face Westford Academy in the Championship game which will be played on Sunday night.
