Counter View on CO2 Levels

Award-winning physicist Dr. Will Happer coined the phrase “CO2 famine” and branded claims about man-made global warming as “mistaken” today at a Congressional hearing. Happer, who has published over 200 scientific papers, made his thoughts known during the Environmental and Public Works Full Committee Hearing. Entitled “Update on the Latest Global Warming Science,” the hearing afforded Happer the opportunity to make several eyebrow-raising claims.

“The increase in CO2 is not a cause for alarm and will be good for mankind,” Happer said.“Children should not be force-fed propaganda, masquerading as science.”
Happer is a professor in the Department of Physics at Princeton University. He was also the former Director of Energy Research at the Department of Energy from 1990 to 1993. However, Happer was reportedly fired by former Vice President Al Gore in 1993 for not agreeing with Gore’s scientific views. - Examiner.com

Not surprised by that.

The Story Behind Global Warming

The key players are now all in place in Washington and in state governments across America to officially label carbon dioxide as a pollutant and enact laws that tax we citizens for our carbon footprints. Only two details stand in the way, the faltering economic times and a dramatic turn toward a colder climate. The last two bitter winters have lead to a rise in public awareness that CO2 is not a pollutant and is not a significant greenhouse gas that is triggering runaway global warming.

Global Warming Dissenters Speak Up

POZNAN, Poland, December 18, 2008 - The UN global warming conference which concluded Friday in Poland faced a serious challenge from over 650 dissenting scientists from around the globe who criticized the climate claims made by the UN IPCC and former Vice President Al Gore. A newly updated U.S. Senate Minority Report was released last week featuring the dissenting voices of over 650 international scientists, many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN.

The report has added about 250 scientists (and growing) in 2008 to the over 400 scientists who spoke out in 2007. The over 650 dissenting scientists are more than 12 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers. - LifeSiteNews
The Nobel Prize Winner for Physics, Ivar Giaever, went as far to say "global warming has become a new religion."

The Other Side of Global Warming

"The great fear of modern man revolves not around God, religion, or even terrorism, but global warming.

Hysteria over the future of our planet has become so widespread that many who dare to question the validity of global warming are expelled from the scientific community.

Take for example naturalist David Bellamy, who made his name as a respected botanist and author of 35 books while presenting TV programs for the BBC. Ten years ago, Bellamy was shunned by the BBC for denying anthropogenic, or human-induced, global warming. ""

Bellamy states, "When I first stuck my head above the parapet to say I didn't believe what we were being told about global warming I had no idea what the consequences would be…The sad fact is that since I said I didn't believe human beings caused global warming I've not been allowed to make a TV programme." - The Cowl

China: "Change Your Lifestyle, Rich Countries"

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has said developed countries should change their "unsustainable lifestyles" to tackle global warming.

Mr Wen said richer nations should help poorer ones solve the global problem.

United Nations climate chief Yvo de Boer said rich countries had to transfer cleaner energy technologies to developing nations.

Arctic Air Temps At Record High

Less summer ice - which deflects solar radiation - has resulted in a rise in both the ocean and atmospheric temperature.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says autumn air temperatures in the region are at a record 5ºC (9ºF) above average.

The annual NOAA report, which monitors climate change, said there has been a near-record loss of summer sea ice, though not as much as last year which was the warmest on record for the Arctic, continuing a trend that began in the mid-1960s.
They also report a loss of surface ice in Greenland. - Telegram.co.uk

An Ice Age Cometh

Disconcerting as it may be to true believers in global warming, the average temperature on Earth has remained steady or slowly declined during the past decade, despite the continued increase in the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide, and now the global temperature is falling precipitously.

All four agencies that track Earth's temperature (the Hadley Climate Research Unit in Britain, the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, the Christy group at the University of Alabama, and Remote Sensing Systems Inc in California) report that it cooled by about 0.7C in 2007. This is the fastest temperature change in the instrumental record and it puts us back where we were in 1930. If the temperature does not soon recover, we will have to conclude that global warming is over.

There is also plenty of anecdotal evidence that 2007 was exceptionally cold. It snowed in Baghdad for the first time in centuries, the winter in China was simply terrible and the extent of Antarctic sea ice in the austral winter was the greatest on record since James Cook discovered the place in 1770. - The Australian

When will it cometh?

"The next descent into an ice age is inevitable but may not happen for another 1000 years. On the other hand, it must be noted that the cooling in 2007 was even faster than in typical glacial transitions. If it continued for 20 years, the temperature would be 14C cooler in 2027."

Alarming Rate of Ice Melt

Arctic sea ice in winter is melting far faster than before -- a new and alarming trend that threatens the ocean's delicate ecosystem. The sudden and rapid melting is a sure sign of man-made global warming, said researchers in NASA studies Wednesday. "It has never occurred before," said NASA senior research scientist Josefino Comiso. "It is alarming... This winter ice provides the kind of evidence that it is indeed associated with the greenhouse effect." Scientists have long worried about melting Arctic sea ice in the summer, but they have not seen a big winter drop in sea ice, even though they expected it. For more than 25 years, Arctic sea ice has slowly diminished in winter by about 1.5 percent per decade. But in the past two years the melting has occurred at rates 10 to 15 times faster. From 2004 to 2005, the amount of ice dropped 2.3 percent; and over the past year, it has declined by another 1.9 percent, according to Comiso. - RSOE Havaria

Greenhouse Gas Depletion

LONDON - Sea spray and microscopic plants from the tropical Atlantic are destroying greenhouse gases in the lower atmosphere at a faster pace than scientists had thought, British researchers said yesterday.

The findings, published in the journal Nature, not only mean that current climate models may need adjusting, but they also underscore the difficulties in trying to predict future temperature changes, the researchers said.

"One of the key things we need to do in the future is reduce uncertainty around the natural processes that destroy greenhouse gases," said Alastair Lewis of Britain's National Centre for Atmospheric Science, who helped lead the study. "This is one of the first times we have been able to go and see how those models were doing at predicting the rate of destruction of some greenhouse gases." - Boston Globe via Reuters

More Anti-Global Warming Stuff

Gore’s movie trumpeted that 1998 was the warmest year on record. This is wrong. An error was found in the NASA GISS data and when corrected made 1934 hottest year on record, not 1998; 1921, became the third hottest year on record not 2006; three of the five hottest years on record occurred before 1940; Six of the top 10 hottest years occurred prior to 90 percent of the growth in human produced greenhouse gas emissions during the last century. If it was a genuine error then somebody should be fired, if it wasn’t there are more serious implications. Suspicions are raised by a pattern of ‘adjustments’ that make earlier years cooler thus making more recent years warmer. The procedures that cause this are explained in an article titled, “Rewriting History, Time and time again.”

The pattern of adjustments and failure to disclose methods is deeply disturbing and requires much more investigation. It parallels too closely what has happened at the IPCC and makes a mockery of their claim that, “Eleven of the last twelve years (1995-2006) rank among the twelve warmest years in the instrumental record of global surface temperature (since 1850).”

The 66% error factor is sufficient in itself to reject the argument that Jones’ figure represents an unusual increase. It is definitely inadequate to serve as the basis for a global climate and energy policy. But there is a more serious problem. - Canada Free Press

I don't feel like searching the archives, but sometime last year I made a post commenting on the correction.

Bahrain goes green

MANAMA: Commercial diesel prices will almost double from the start of next month as the government moves to slash subsidies, it emerged yesterday.Bahrain is also considering the introduction of electric cars to help reduce harmful emissions.

Looks like the green movement has spread far past the United States, all the way to where Michael Jackson lives.

Scientists name areas to be most affected by global warming

Scientists have long agreed that climate change could have a profound impact on the planet; from melting ice sheets and withering rainforests, to flash floods and droughts.

Now a team of climate experts has ranked the most fragile and vulnerable regions on the planet, and warned they are in danger of sudden and catastrophic collapse before the end of the century.

Join the board. So, just where ARE those areas?
Although the scientists cannot be sure precisely when each region will reach the point of no return, their assessment warns it may already be too late to save Arctic sea ice and the Greenland ice sheet, which they regard as the most immediately in peril.

Our grandchildren won't know what ice is.
The next most vulnerable area is the Amazon rainforest, where reduced rainfall threatens to claim large areas of trees that will not re-establish themselves. The scientists also expressed concerns over the Boreal forests in the north, and have predicted that El Niño, the climate system which has a profound impact on weather from Africa to North America, will become more intense.

Oh, boy. This global warming is going to screw up the weather all over the world.
The Indian summer monsoon is predicted to become erratic and in the worst case scenario, begin to flip chaotically, unleashing flash floods one year and droughts the next.

Measurements of the western Antarctic ice sheet show the balance of snowfall and melting has shifted and it is now shrinking.

I hope those penguins can swim.

Celebrities honor Al Gore, UN climate panel

OSLO, Norway—Stars performing at a concert Tuesday honoring Nobel Peace laureates Al Gore and the United Nations climate panel said they hoped to draw attention to global warming.

Gore and the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change shared the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to document and spread the word about what the former vice president calls the "planetary emergency" of global warming.

Performers at the annual concert included Kylie Minogue, Alicia Keys, Annie Lennox and Melissa Etheridge. Etheridge won an Oscar for the song "I Need to Wake Up," which was featured in Gore's documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth."

Etheridge said Gore asked her to write the song.

"I was deeply honored, I was deeply moved and then I had to write a song about global warming, which is not easy," the 46-year-old singer said, adding that Gore's efforts gave her "a great amount of hope for our Earth."

Keys said the Nobel Peace Prize underscores how the efforts of one person, such as civil-rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., can make a difference.

"For me, the Nobel Peace Prize is an extremely distinguished award for people who truly do serious work to make major change in the world," the 26-year-old singer said.

Kevin Spacey and Uma Thurman were co-hosts of the concert.

I hope this Go Green movement is more than just another fad...otherwise, we'll just go back to destroying the planet.

Humans endangering Earth and themselves

PARIS: The human population is living far beyond its means and inflicting damage
to the environment that could pass points of no return, according to a major
report issued on Thursday by the United Nations.

Climate change, the rate of extinction of species, and the challenge of feeding a growing population are among the threats mentioned in the UN Environment Program's latest Global Environment Outlook.

Greenland's ice sheet melts as temperatures rise

But below the surface, the ice sheet is in constant motion, as ice built up in the interior pushes toward the coast in the form of massive glaciers. During warmer months, ice from these glaciers melts into the ocean.

It's an age-old process that scientists say has sped up in recent decades because of global warming.

The fear is that melting ice from Greenland and other Arctic areas could cause sea levels to rise enough to flood low-lying cities, such as Shanghai, China, and New York City, displacing millions of people in the process.

A recent report from the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, made up of scientists from around the world, estimates the sea level rise by 2100 could be as much as 1½ feet. Source: www.cnn.com

This would be very scary if it really flooded the cities mentioned in the article. Global Warming.

Global warming initiative tied up

From the Boston Globe:

A global climate change initiative that is a top priority of Democratic legislative leaders has become entwined in a debate over whether the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant should be taxed to help pay for it.

Yankee executives argued that they have already contributed millions of dollars towards alternative energy.
