Digital Switch Delayed

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - About 40 percent of the nation's hundreds of TV stations will be broadcasting completely in digital signals next week, even after regulators delayed a mandatory nationwide switch to "DTV" by months.

The Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday said 681 of the nearly 1800 television broadcast stations will have already stopped broadcasting in older, analog signals, or will by next week.

The U.S. House of Representatives last week voted to delay the mandatory change by four months -- to June 12 from February 17. President Barack Obama is expected to sign the bill into law shortly.

Seems like a pretty pointless issue.

Summer Heights High

Let me start off by saying that I rarely ever watch T.V. I occasionally watch sports, but other than that I'm mostly an online person (the most obvious exception is the amazing show Curb Your Enthusiasm, but it hasn't aired since 2007). So anyway...My sister has been quoting Summer Heights High for a couple of weeks now. I don't blame her because I am now partially hooked. It's On Demand on Comcast in case anyone wants to check it out. Basically, one guy (Chris Lilley) plays three different characters. All three are hilarious. There is Jonah, a 14 year old illiterate wanksta who is always getting in trouble at Summer Heights High, an Australian public school. There is Ja'mie, a female exchange student who thinks she is the shit. And finally you have Mr. G, Summer Heights High Director of Performing Arts. Lilley is a comic genius and for that reason you should watch this show.

Ann Coulter Cut From NBC

The nation's top selling conservative author has been banned from appearing on NBC, insiders tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

Banned for life!

"We are just not going to have her on any more, it's over," a top network source explains.

NBC's TODAY show abruptly cut Ann Coulter from its planned Tuesday broadcast, claiming the schedule was overbooked.

But executives at NBC TODAY replaced Coulter with showbiz reporter Perez Hilton, who recently offered $1,000 to anyone who would throw a pie at Ann Coulter. Hilton is also launching a new book this week, RED CARPET SUICIDE.
As you may recall NBC pulled a similar shenanigan by censoring Rage Against the Machine a few years back.

Lights Turned Off For GOP

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the Democrats adjourned the House, turned off the lights and killed the microphones, but Republicans are still on the floor talking gas prices.
Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) and other GOP leaders opposed the motion to adjourn the House, arguing that Pelosi's refusal to schedule a vote allowing offshore drilling is hurting the American economy. They have refused to leave the floor after the adjournment motion passed at 11:23 a.m., and they are busy bashing Pelosi and her fellow Democrats for leaving town for the August recess.
At one point, the lights went off in the House and the microphones were turned off in the chamber, meaning Republicans were talking in the dark. But as Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz..) was speaking, the lights went back on and the microphones were turned on shortly afterward.
But C-SPAN, which has no control over the cameras in the chamber, has stopped broadcasting the House floor, meaning no one was witnessing this except the assembled Republicans, their aides, and one Democrat, Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Ohio), who has now left. - Politico
Each of the corporate shill parties should get a chance to speak...not that either of them have anything good to say.

Heinz Pulls Gay Commercial

LONDON — Heinz Co. said viewer complaints prompted it to pull a British television advertisement for mayonnaise that showed two men kissing.

The ad for Heinz Deli Mayo depicted a kitchen scene involving two children, a father and a male deli cook with a New York accent, whom the children addressed as "Mum." At the end of the ad, the cook kisses the father as he leaves for work.

The Advertising Standards Authority said it received 202 complaints, some that said the advertisement was offensive, inappropriate and unsuitable for children.

Heinz said the ad was withdrawn because of "consumer feedback." Spokesman Nigel Dickie said Tuesday that the company apologized if it had offended anyone. - Comcast.net

Damn straight that be pulled off the tube.

Fallon Rumored To Take Over For Conan

The word is out among the NBC brass: As rumored and bounced around for some time, Jimmy Fallon is set to take Conan O’Brien’s job as host of "Late Night" in 2009. It’s a done deal.

Conan, of course, will be taking over for Jay Leno, who will leave the "Tonight" show in May 2009 as part of a forced retirement.

There’s much debate about letting Leno leave NBC etc., but right now let’s just concentrate on Jimmy. He’s the perfect successor to Conan and should have just as big an audience when he takes the reins. Fallon is one of those great underrated performers. This should be the right milieu for him.

I’m told NBC will make the formal announcement about Fallon around May 11 or 12, when the network presents the fall '08 schedule to advertisers here in New York. - Fox News

I don't care about stuff like this, but maybe you do?

Nature Getting No Love

Washington—As people spend more time communing with their televisions and computers, the impact is not just on their health, researchers say. Less time spent outdoors means less contact with nature and, eventually, less interest in conservation and parks.

Camping, fishing and per capita visits to parks are all declining in a shift away from nature-based recreation, researchers report in Monday's online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Declining nature participation has crucial implications for current conservation efforts," wrote co-authors Oliver R. W. Pergams and Patricia A. Zaradic. "We think it probable than any major decline in the value placed on natural areas and experiences will greatly reduce the value people place on biodiversity conservation."

"The replacement of vigorous outdoor activities by sedentary, indoor videophilia has far-reaching consequences for physical and mental health, especially in children," Pergams said in a statement. "Videophilia has been shown to be a cause of obesity, lack of socialization, attention disorders and poor academic performance." - Associated Press

I would much rather spend my time online than with mother nature. People as a whole need to cut down on time spent watching television (and going online...I guess). Hiking, biking, and fishing are all fun alternatives to the said "stay at home" activities.

Relating music to news:

"Once there were parking lots
Now it's a peaceful oasis
you got it, you got it

This was a Pizza Hut
Now it's all covered with daisies
you got it, you got it" - Talking Heads: (Nothing But) Flowers

American Idol (er, Evil) Returns Tonight

"American Idol" launches its seventh season on Fox tonight, but newbie vocalists vying for prime time's biggest prize may be troubled by recent news. It seems that the days of winning "Idol" and automatically becoming one not only are long gone, but were a mirage in the first place.

Last week, Taylor Hicks, who won season 5, was dropped by his record label after selling 699,000 copies of his 2006 debut, which disappointed Arista. Soon after that, his runner-up, Katharine McPhee - who didn't quite hit the 400,000 mark with her RCA release - was also shown the door. Add to that list season 2 victor Ruben Studdard, who got the boot from J Records late last year. (All three recorded for subsidiary imprints of Sony BMG, which has contractual first dibs on "Idol" contestants.)

Of course, if being a finalist on "Idol" was all it took to become a pop star, then first season runner-up Justin Guarini would have enjoyed at least as much success as Chris Daughtry, who was season 5's fourth-place finisher but who also had one of the best-selling albums of 2007.

Which contestant will be made into the next manufactured pop star?

Super Sweet 16 (Piece of Shit)

Want to know what the real kiss of death is? Want to know what show is more morally evil and incorrect than American Idol? It is right on the fucking network that millions of youths tune into each and every day. A network that visually and psychologically enslaves them. The network is MTV and the show is Super Sweet 16. If you have never seen it, the show documents rich, spoiled, and hedonistic teenagers' 16th birthday parties. The birthday girls waste their fathers' monies on thousand dollar dresses, diamond jewelry, and the like. After they buy their dress, they go on to have their birthday bash at some high class place. Often, a celebrity is invited to the party. I was just watching one episode and fuck! The only thing that prevented me from punching the television screen was a potential trip to the hospital on Christmas Eve. I mean seriously, at the very least has there ever been an episode featuring an unattractive, middle class girl? I doubt it. This show is pathetic. I am going to e-mail MTV and express my disdain to them, those uncreative fucks.
