Primary Influence or Combined Cover?

I love the following two bands greatly. The song "Sweet Jane" by the Velvet Underground launched in 1970. It's great. In fact, you should listen to it:



Also keep in mind the song "Sister Ray" which is heavier than "Sweet Jane" and give it a listen:



You should notice that if you combine the two songs above you will come out with a result known as Jonathan Richman's "Roadrunner." I have to give Richman a lot of credit as he was 19 when he started performing "Roadrunner," but that, Rolling Stone's 269th Greatest Song of All-Time, wouldn't have been if it wasn't for those Velvet Underground songs.

    Not many people bought the Velvet Underground's first album, but everyone who did started a band.
    Jonathan Richman bought that album.
