Doesn't it seem like Wakefield's getting screwed compared to other towns? Senator Tisei seems to think so.
BOSTON - Senate Minority Leader Richard R. Tisei is calling on the Legislature to restore the $5 million in water and sewer rate relief that Governor Deval Patrick struck from the Fiscal Year 2009 state budget, saying the funding provides critical assistance for Wakefield homeowners and calling its restoration his “top priority.”
On Sunday, July 13, the governor announced he had vetoed $122.5 million in proposed spending from the budget through a series of cuts and spending reductions. Among the items affected was the Commonwealth Sewer Rate Relief Fund, which Patrick reduced from the $20 million recommended by the Legislature to $15 million.
“Of all the items to cut, it's unbelievable the governor would choose something that provides real financial relief to hundreds of thousands of residents in the Commonwealth,” said Tisei. “The governor just doesn't seem to get it when it comes to understanding the difficulties families are facing as they struggle to pay high water and sewer bills.”
Tisei is urging the House of Representatives to initiate an override vote to restore the $5 million cut by the governor before formal sessions end on July 31. A vote by the House is required before the Senate can take action on any budget vetoes.
With the $20 million appropriated by the Legislature, Wakefield was scheduled to receive $180,618 to help offset this year's rate increases from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA).
