Toody's to serve liquor

WAKEFIELD - Toody's, a Water Street institution known for its submarine
sandwiches and Italian dishes, is about to enter a new era after more than 60
years in business. The primarily lunch and take-out dinner restaurant will expand
its hours and its eat-in dinner service after being granted a Malt and Wine
License by the Board of Selectmen this week.Founded in 1945 by Sal “Toody” Canto
and his brother-in-law Paul D'Amico, Toody's remains a family-owned business
currently operated by Richard Canto, Toody's son, and other members of the Canto
family. In 2006, the eatery relocated a few blocks from its original location to
its current quarters at 49 Water St.Represented by local attorney Michael
McCarthy, Canto appeared before the selectmen Monday night to request a license
to serve beer and wine. McCarthy explained that the owners had invested a
significant sum of money into the new location and were facing the same
increased costs that are affecting all businesses, as well as competition from
over 30 other pizza and sub shops in town.“They need to do what others have done
to increase the number of customers and offer more services,” McCarthy said. By
offering beer and wine, Toody's would be able to increase its dinner service and
remain competitive, McCarthy told the selectmen.
I've never been here. Is it good?

  1. Nope! Well, I've only had the chicken parmigiana sub at Toody's, but I'd say near-by restaurants like Dettores and Kipo are much better.
