South Africa will consider contributing helicopters and ground transport to the new hybrid African Union-United Nations peacekeeping force for Darfur, President Thabo Mbeki said today.
According to allafrica.com, the hybrid force is due to deploy in the beginning of January next year. Mbeki said the force had more offers of infantry than it needed, but that they still need helicopters and ground transport. If South Africa contributes two battalions of troops, it will raise the force to UN battalion strength. Looks like they'll do fine over there without the U.S.'s help.
