WASHINGTON: A senior U.S. official urged Myanmar's military government Thursday to begin meaningful talks with the opposition and pressed the country's neighbors to increase pressure on the junta for a transition to democracy.
The official is Scot Marciel, a deputy assistant secretary of state. He made these comments at the Foreign Press Center after hearing Myanmar's announcement that it would allow Aung San Suu Kyi to meet her party's officials for the first time in more than three years, reacting with caution. Like he says, the military junta needs to stop being so stubborn and admit that it's time for a change.
