Consumers are shopping to the tune of "more, more, more." Consumerism these days....WASHINGTON (AP) -- Consumers put aside worries about slumping home sales and soaring gasoline prices and headed to the malls in November, pushing spending up by the largest amount in 3.5 years.
The Commerce Department reported Friday that consumer spending surged by 1.1 percent last month, nearly triple the October gain. The gain reflected various promotional efforts by retailers such as heavy discounting and longer store hours at the start of the holiday shopping season.

Consumerism helps the economy. Businesses can compete so long as they do not corrupt the government.
ReplyDeleteOf course Consumerism helps the economy. But like anything else, it can be abused. The mass consumerism we have right now is reprehensible.
ReplyDeleteNo its not. Companies can promote their products if they please, consumers can buy if they please. So long as no one is hurt by it, then why the hell does everyone have a problem with it?
ReplyDeleteMass consumerism is defined as companies promoting their products IN ANYWAY they please. People aren't knowingly hurt by it, but their subconscious is assailed with ads.
ReplyDeleteOkay, so some Chinese children labor away at making products. That is not the consumer's fault, that is the company's fault. And due to god bless capitalism the government cannot do much about that. No, I am not advocating socialism.
ReplyDeleteAnd how are they hurt buy it, seriously, they buy the product, enjoy it or they don't, but their lives remain quite unchanged.
ReplyDeleteYou are advocating anti-corporatism and rightly so.
ReplyDeleteWell, you are right in that you either enjoy a product or you don't. I know some people around here that advocate for a system where you make your own informed decisions (as opposed to being influenced by advertisements)
You are seriously missing the point. They make the decision to buy the product, so there is no harm in that. I do not see why everyone wants to limit things that have no need in being limited. I am not anti-corporatism, it keeps the economy afloat. I am not for corporatism either. The world may be black and white, but there are always more choices after you answer yes or no. Yes I do not like big corporations, yes I think that the government should have stricter control over them, no they should not be limited in competing with other companies by endorsing their products. See, there is always a mix.
