But even as he criticized Iranian leaders, saying they were seeking to repress their citizens and cow neighboring countries, Bush appealed to US allies in the region to open up their political and economic systems to greater democracy.

Spotlighting a swath of the globe where US diplomacy is built around seeking help for the administration's antiterrorism effort, the president criticized only Iran by name. He avoided mentioning Egypt, his final stop on a six- nation Middle East trip, despite the country's long record of human rights abuses, limited political rights, and economic disparity. He also did not cite other nations across the region with similarly troubled histories.
Speaking 150 miles across the Persian Gulf from Iran, Bush said the Islamic Republic "sends hundreds of millions of dollars to extremists around the world, while its own people face repression and economic hardship at home." He said Iran was seeking "to intimidate its neighbors with ballistic missiles and bellicose rhetoric." - The Boston Globe

ReplyDeleteThe reason so many nations oppose the US is that it sentiently asserts its views on them. The way we bring democracy to the "repressed" people of the world is by causing destabilization of their current government. The common man doesn't care as much that he can say whatever he wants as that he can feed his children. By adopting this policy the US of "spreading the democracy" the US becomes a chief antagonist. Just look at some of the CIA's recently released documents, for example, some nations were subject to biological attack where foreign pests were introduced to destroy crops. Sure... they'll get freedom if they rebel, but ultimately they'll still hate the US for it. Also, as stated in the article, the US supports nations which do not have freedom and repress their peoples as long as it is favorable to those in power. Hell, Osama was financed by our trusty CIA when the Soviets were in Afghanistan. Bush hasn't laid anything down, he's just a sock puppet.
ReplyDeleteThe point here is, if I were amongst Iran's people, I'd love my leader. He's sticking it to those that would be seen as money hungry imperialists and funding people to fight against them.
